The Grocery Run as recently seen on Today Tonight may not actually have the fantastic discounts that were reported as the prices are compared to the off the shelf prices at Coles and Woolworths. Now given that The Grocery Run is bi-monthly I'd say they should be considered as specials and that deserves a whole different grocery price comparison.
Take the the following items listed on The Grocery Run website as at the 17th March 2011
4 x Greenseas Tomato Tuna 95g - $4.00
Just about every week I see 95g cans of tuna on sale for $1.00 at one of the large chains, actually the best price I've seen this product for is 89c cents
Uncle Tobys Vita Brits 1kg - $2.99
This would be a normal special price
Veri Deli Caramelised Onion & Sour Cream 180g - $1.75
This would be a normal special price
Nescafe Gold Blend Original 100g - $5.82
The best price I've see a 200g Nescafe Gold was for $8.00
2 x IXL Conserve 250g - Apricot and Raspberry - $3.40
Specials for this product range from $1.50-$1.99 each
These prices are no better than weekly specials that you would see in the weekly catalogues from the large supermarket chains and lets face it you would have to visit them anyway to pick up the rest of your weekly shopping, so why be limited to only these specials. At first I was excited to hear that there might be some real savings at The Grocery Run but it's just another marketing gimmick to probably get more people to the Catch of the Day website.
Regular visitors to the myPrice website would already know this and would have already compared the community prices with those on this new site. However, we will keep a watch on these prices and if they become unbeatable then we will be sure to add them to the specials check against your myPrice shopping list.
So consumers beware of the hyped up advertising for The Grocery Run, create a shopping list, be sure to only buy what you need and don't forget to add the $12.00 postage when doing your real price comparison.

Grocery Run Feedback I noted that the feedback for the story that ACA ran on the Grocery Run wasn't exactly glowing http://aca.ninemsn.com.au/reta...ocery-wars. However, it's refreshing to know that Australians have wised up to these short term attempts at providing so called value for money at the checkouts. |
