Supermarketdeals.com.au has launched and we are one of the first to see what bargains can be found on this site. Being a direct competitor to the Grocery Run we have expectations of huge savings on everyday grocery items, but are actually a little underwhelmed with what we find.
Supermarketdeals has a simple shopping cart interface which would be familiar to you if you already do any shopping online. Their banner advertising says “Don't pay $139.57” which is the quoted price from Woolworths online and suggest that their price for a similar basket is $81.50. Of course the basket only has one edible item in it which are Tim Tam's so this basket isn't ideal to feed a family of four. So lets take a look at some of the offers.
- Nescafe Original 200g $5.00 - seems like a good price but who still drinks this
- Tim Tams 200g $2.00 – $2.00 is a normal special price
- Jatz biscuits 200g $3.00 – overpriced, try $2.00 or less
- Corn Chips 175g $2.75 – I can buy these for $2.00 any day of the week
- Potatoe chips 175g $2.75 – Similarly pay no more than $2.00
- Kettle chips $3.50 185g - Special price usually $3.00 or less
- San remo pasta 500g $2.00 – you can do better, try $1.50
- Continental Pasta& sauce range 85g $2.00 – Buy these for $1.00 when on special
- Vegemite $3.80 220g – Not a great price
- Cottee's jam 500g $3.25 – Frequently on special at $2.50 or less
- Just Juice poppers 6 x 200ml $2.50 – This is a good price but not worth placing an order just for these
- Pampers Cruisers Unisex Box 116 $20 – This price seems ok but if you’re looking for this quality of nappy you might as well buy the Aldi brand. Huggies have quite a market share so disappointed not to see them on offer here.
The shipping for Supermarket Deals is $11 for unlimited order size.
We haven't priced any household and beauty products because we are more interested in the cost of putting food on the table, so we'll leave those price checks up to you. However, feel free to use the myPrice website for price comparisons if you need more price comparisons.
So if you pre-registered on supermarketdeals.com.au before the launch and received your 15% off discount coupon I'd say hang onto it until they become more price competitive. Given that they are new to this market segment it might take a little time to warm up to customer expectations..
