It hasn't taken long for Woolworths to see the benefits of a fully functional smartphone app to help you with your everyday shopping, so we decided to take a closer look.
My Specials (login required) – This is the most revealing feature of this app. It shows you weekly specials based on products that you appear to have purchased previously. Therefore, qualifying an urban myth that the big chains link your credit card or rewards cards specifically to your spending habits. The only way to keep it personal is to use cash.
My Fuel Vouchers (login required) – This feature displays your available fuel vouchers if you are using your Everyday Rewards card when you make purchases. If also shows past history of fuel purchases using a voucher.
Weekly Catalogue – (network required) The weekly catalogue shows an itemised list of grocery specials specific to your preferred store. You can add to your shopping list but being in a list format it's a little boring to search through.
Shopping Lists – Now that you have added some items to your shopping list and selected your preferred store you can view by aisle, change quantity and tick then off once they are in your trolley. If you want to send this to someone or want a print out, this app also has an email feature.
Product Finder (network required) – This feature assists with those quick dashes into an unfamiliar store. Once you browsed through the categories or scanned a product barcode, Product Finder will let you know if your preferred store stocks that item and which aisle you will find it in. You can also add it to your shopping list.
Recipes – This is a nice little addition to the app and provides hundreds of easy recipes for you to try. Although these recipes are loaded onto your phone during app installation the photos are downloaded from the network, which is a little annoying when you are living in a black spot. The recipes selections can be searched or browsed by Meal Type or Cuisine and are classified as easy to medium difficulty, most not taking any more than 30 minutes preparation time. You can tag your ingredients and then add the selected or all ingredients automatically to your shopping list which is a handy feature, but lookout for the product placement in these recipes.
Store Finder – As the name suggests, if you are looking for a store then this feature can locate your nearest store based on your GPS location. Unfortunately, after several attempts this failed to identify my location and I was required to enter my location in manually. It the brings up a map of the closest store and gives you the option to make this your preferred store.
In summary it's a very good app with lots of useful features and apart from having trouble with the GPS location, it seems bug free. So download it and give it a try and let us know what you think. I'm still waiting for Coles to match this with something similar, but expect this soon.
